Coorg - Karnataka

Kodagu is an administrative district in Karnataka, India. Before 1956 it was an administratively separate Coorg State,at which point it was merged into an enlarged Mysore State. It occupies an area of 4,102 square kilometres in the Western Ghats of southwestern Karnataka.

Coorg is one place on this earth where tourists looking for relaxation along with the occasional adrenaline rush can find something to do. Rightly named as the “adventure capital of Karnataka”, Coorg is the ideal place for an adventurous holiday.

Coorg, or also known as Kodagu is one of the most beautiful lands placed in the heart of the Southern Indian peninsula. It is situated on the slopes of Western Ghats and is counted amongst the unspoilt zones of the country. This tiny place in Karnataka is the biggest producer of coffee. The extremely fertile land is flooded with streams, rivers, high hills, dense forests thus providing varied places for people to visit and explore.

Places to visit:

Madikeri is the capital of the district and Raja's Seat park is popular with tourists. Kootu Poley dam is also popular among tourists.St. Mark's Church is located within the Mercara Fort and was raised in 1859, by the officers and men of the East India Company. The building was funded by the Government of Madras, and placed under the Church of England in India, Diocese of Madras.

Abbey Falls is a scenic waterfall 5 km from Madikeri. Mallalli falls is 25 km from Somawarapet, downhill of the Pushpagiri hills. Mandalapatti is 28 km from Madikeri.


Flying off (Microlight): Coorg Sky Adventures give you the opportunity to experience the chilly winds on your face, in a two-seater open plane that takes you to the height of 3500 sq. ft. This activity is highly impacted by the weather conditions and time of the day.

Tadiyandamol peak (1,745 meters) is the highest peak in Coorg and poses an exciting challenge to seasoned trekkers. The peak is located in the south-eastern part of Coorg and is 8 km from the town of Kakkabe which is 35 km from Madikeri. The NALAKNAD PALACE, built by Dodda Veerarajendra in 1792, serves as the base camp for trekkers who can make an overnight stay before climbing the Tadiyandamol peak in the morning’ It is worth recalling a brief history of the Nalaknad Palace.

Air: The nearest airports are Mangalore (136 km) and Bangalore (260 km)

Train: The nearest railheads are at Mysore (120 km) and Mangalore (136 km)

Road Route: Bangalore – Mysore – Hunsur – Madikeri (Mercara) . By road, 7 hours from Bangalore to Madikeri. Route State Highway 17 to Srirangapatna via Maddur; bypass via Ranganathittu (bird sanctuary) to Hunsur. State Highway 88 to Madikeri via Kushalnagar and Suntikoppa.
