Dehra Dun is the capital city of the state of Uttarakhand in the northern part of India. Located in the Garhwal region, it lies 236 km north of India's capital New Delhi and is one of the "Counter Magnets" of the National Capital Region (NCR) being developed as an alternative centre of growth to help ease the migration and population explosion in the Delhi metropolitan area and creation highways to establish a smart city at Dehradun.

Dehradun is in the Doon Valley on the foothills of the Himalayas nestled between the river Ganges on the east and the river Yamuna on the west. The city is famous for its picturesque landscape and slightly milder climate and provides a gateway to the surrounding region. Tourist destinations include the Dehradun zoo, Kalanga monument, Chandrabani, himalayan gallary cum regional science centre Guchhupani, Forest Research Institute, Tapovan, Central Braille Press and Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology.


The tourist destinations can be divided into four or five areas: nature, sports, sanctuary, museums and institutions. The nearby hill stations are well known for their natural beauty, sanctuary for animal and bird lovers. Hill stations include Mussoorie, Sahastradhara, Chakrata, and Dakpathar.

In sports tourism, the Doon Ice Rink at Maharana Pratap Sports Complex, Raipur is the first full-sized ice arena in India.It has hosted ice skating competitions and ice hockey tournaments, including the IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia.

Transport:

Air:
Jolly Grant airport is the nearest one to Dehradun, lying about 30 kms (1 hr 10 min) away from the city. Major flights like Indigo, Jet Airways, Air India etc have regular flights here from all major cities. Pre paid taxis can be availed from here to the city.

Rail:
Dehradun railway station (DDN) is the nearest junction located at a short distance from the main city. Regular trains from all parts of India have a stoppage here.

Road:
Uttarakhand State buses runs regular buses from all parts of the state, nearby cities and even from Delhi (Kashmera Gate). The Dehradun bus station is about 5-6 km away from the main city and a cab or taxi should be hailed from the same. NH44, NH334, NH307 are the national highways passing through the city.
