Kumarakom - Kerala

Kumarakom is a popular tourism destination located near the city of Kottayam (16 kilometres), in Kerala, India, famous for its backwater tourism.It is set in the backdrop of the Vembanad Lake, the largest lake in the state of Kerala.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a noted bird sanctuary where many species of migratory birds visit.The 14 acre bird sanctuary is the favorite spot for migratory birds from all parts of the world. It is situated on the banks of Vembanad Lake. The bird sanctuary houses a wide range of birds including cuckoo, water duck, owl, kingfishers, woodpeckers and egret. The migratory birds that attract attention include Siberian cranes, teal, wood beetle and many more. It is a birdwatchers’ paradise and you could make best use of your visit to this place by hiring houseboats and motorboats.

The Vembanad Lake, the largest backwater in Kerala, is habitat for many marine and freshwater fish species and it teems with Karimeen (Pearl spot also known as Etroplus suratensis) shrimp (Metapenaeus dobsonii) common name Poovalan chemeen.


The small islands around and the serene atmosphere will be heavenly. The lake is rich in marine creatures with over 150 different kinds of fish in the waters.

Aruvikkuzhi Waterfall and its surrounding rubber plantation are a photographer's delight.It is located 18 km from Kottayam. The over 100 feet high water falls is a famous picnic spot. It falls in five steps and it is an ideal location to be photographed.

Taj Garden Retreat the first modern tourist resort in Kumarakom is established in the Victorian two storied bungalow built by Alfred George Baker in the year 1881, on huge pieces of Teak wood rafters packed in mud as a base. This house on the lake at Kumarakom was the house of four generations of the Baker family, for over a hundred years. The bird Sanctuary and the two storied Bungalow built by Mr.A G Baker on the muddy land are places of interest for tourists from all over the world.

Transport:

By Air The nearest airport is the Cochin International Airport (CIAL) approximately 70 km away. One can fly to most of the metros in India and also to Middle East, Malaysia. Jet Airways, Indian Airlines and Kingfisher operate daily flights to Kochi. Pre-paid taxi service Cochin Airport Taxi Society (CATS) can be hired to reach Kumarakom from the airport. Both A/C and non A/C cabs are available. Taxis charge an additional premium of 15-25% as night charges (7 pm-6 am).

By Train Kottayam is the nearest railhead, about 15 km away. Kottayam is connected by rail to Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi.

By Road Bengaluru: Drive down Kochi on the NH47 (Salem-Kanyakumari) till Cherthala. Use the state highway 40 to Kottayam and then the Kottayam-Kumarakom route. Kumarakom is well serviced by KSRTC buses from Kottayam, which in turn is connected to Ernakulam, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram. Private deluxe AC buses ply regularly between Kottayam and several south Indian cities, including Chennai, Mangalore, Bengaluru and Thiruvananthapuram.
